Golf in a ski town
Steamboat Springs is known for Champagne Powder, but from May through October the Yampa Valley is one of Colorado's better mountain golf destinations. Two 18-hole championship courses sit inside city limits, Haymaker Golf Course and Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club, plus the private Tom Weiskopf course at Catamount Ranch & Club. Add the historic nine-hole Steamboat Golf Club west of town and Yampa Valley Golf Club in Craig, and there is a course for every budget and handicap.
For buyers, golf in Steamboat is less about gated fairway lots and more about proximity. Only Catamount is a true golf community. The rest of the valley's golf-oriented real estate is in neighborhoods a few minutes from a first tee, which is why this page lists both the courses and the areas John Madron shows to golf-minded clients.

Haymaker Golf Course
18 holes, par 72, 5,059 to 7,308 yards. Keith Foster, opened 1997.
Owned by the City of Steamboat Springs and routinely ranked among the best public courses in Colorado, Haymaker is a links-style layout across 233 acres of former ranchland three miles south of downtown. Foster kept the site free of houses, so every hole plays to open views of Mount Werner and the Flat Tops, with native grass and wetlands framing wide fairways and large, gently rolling greens. It carries Audubon International's Signature Program distinction.
For buyers this is the everyday course: Routt County residents pay roughly half the guest rate and can buy season passes and punch cards, which makes the South Valley neighborhoods along US 40 and Highway 131 an easy call for anyone who wants to play two or three times a week.

Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club
18 holes, par 72, up to 6,730 yards. Robert Trent Jones Jr., opened 1974.
The resort course at the base of Steamboat Ski Resort, operated with the Sheraton Steamboat Resort and managed by Troon. Fish Creek runs through seven holes, more than 60 bunkers guard large bentgrass greens, and the tree-lined routing gives Rollingstone a slope rating in the 140s from the back tees, one of the stiffer tests in the region. Views run across the Yampa Valley from most of the course.
This is the course closest to the mountain neighborhoods. Homes and condos along Steamboat Boulevard, in Fish Creek Falls, and around the Sheraton and ski base put the first tee within a few minutes of the front door, with the lifts equally close in winter.

Catamount Ranch & Club
18 holes, par 72, 7,088 yards. Tom Weiskopf, opened 2000.
The valley's only private club and its only true golf community. Weiskopf's signature course climbs and drops through alpine meadows on the east side of town above Lake Catamount, with forced carries off many tees and a slope near 150 from the tips; Golf Digest has ranked it among Colorado's best. The course is Audubon-sanctioned, and the clubhouse offers a members' grille, full-service restaurant, golf shop and deck views across the Yampa Valley.
Homesites and homes at Catamount Ranch sit on and around the course, and club membership is the draw for buyers who want fairway frontage, a Weiskopf design, and the ski area fifteen minutes away. Steamboat Golf Club
9 holes, par 35, 2,913 yards. Opened 1964.
The valley's original course, built by local golfers in the mid-1960s and still owned by about 100 member-owners who keep it open to the public. It borders the Yampa River west of town, and what it lacks in length it makes up for with a meandering creek, small greens, and mature cottonwoods. A nine-hole round usually takes under two hours, which is why it's the course locals walk after work.
It's also the closest course to the West Steamboat neighborhoods, Heritage Park, and the new homes going in around Elk River Road and The Glen, the most attainable price points inside the city. Memberships and punch cards keep the cost of playing often low.

Yampa Valley Golf Club
18 holes, par 72, 5,358 to 6,583 yards. William Howard Neff, opened 1968. Craig, about 50 minutes west.
The oldest 18-hole course in the Yampa Valley and by a wide margin the least expensive. It plays along the Yampa River across 240 acres of cottonwoods, wetlands and sage, with no homes on the course, small old-style greens, and enough wind to matter. The longest season in the region, opening in April, gives it a month on the Steamboat courses at each end of the year.
Craig and Hayden are where buyers priced out of Steamboat look, and Yampa Valley Golf Club is one of the reasons the commute is easier to accept. For a golfer, a home in Hayden sits roughly midway between this course and Haymaker.

Catamount Ranch & Club
On the course, private, east of town
The only true golf community in the valley: custom homes and homesites on and around the Weiskopf course, with Lake Catamount below and the ski area fifteen minutes away. Membership is the question to settle before you write an offer.
Mountain area and Fish Creek Falls
Minutes to Rollingstone Ranch
Condos and townhomes at the ski base and single-family homes along Steamboat Boulevard and up Fish Creek Falls Road put Rollingstone's first tee and the gondola within a few minutes of each other. Strong short-term rental demand in the summer golf months as well as winter.
South Valley
Minutes to Haymaker
Ranch parcels and neighborhoods along US 40 East and Highway 131 south of town, including Alpine Mountain Ranch & Club and the Priest Creek and Lake Catamount corridors. Larger lots, open views, and Haymaker's resident rates a short drive away.
West Steamboat
Minutes to Steamboat Golf Club
Heritage Park, the Elk River Road corridor and new construction at The Glen are the most attainable homes in city limits, and the nine-hole club is right down the highway. Downtown is under three miles.
Hayden and Craig
Between Haymaker and Yampa Valley Golf Club
Meaningfully lower prices, the regional airport in Hayden, and a golf course at each end of the commute. Craig's course opens a month before Steamboat's.

How long is the golf season in Steamboat Springs?
Roughly five to six months. Haymaker targets May 1 to November, weather permitting; Rollingstone and Catamount open in late May and close in October. Yampa Valley Golf Club in Craig, a thousand feet lower, opens in April. Peak rates run from Memorial Day weekend to mid-September.
Which courses can I play without a membership?
Four of the five. Haymaker (municipal), Rollingstone Ranch (resort), Steamboat Golf Club (member-owned but open to the public) and Yampa Valley Golf Club all take public tee times. Catamount Ranch & Club is private; you play as a member or a member's guest.
How does the altitude affect ball flight?
At 6,700 to 7,000 feet the air is thinner, so the ball flies farther and curves less. Most players see roughly 8 to 12 percent more carry than at sea level, which is one reason Haymaker stretches past 7,300 yards from the back tees. Club down, and expect less spin on approach shots.
How do I book a tee time?
Online at each course's website or by phone. Haymaker also has an app. Steamboat Golf Club books in nine-hole blocks, and Rollingstone's tee sheet runs through Troon. In July and August, book several days ahead for morning times.
Are there golf-course homes for sale in Steamboat?
Fairway-frontage homes exist only at Catamount Ranch & Club, and inventory there is limited. Most golf-oriented buyers end up in neighborhoods a few minutes from Rollingstone or Haymaker instead. John tracks both, and can set up alerts for Catamount listings as they come to market.
Do Routt County residents get a discount?
At Haymaker, yes, and it's substantial: in 2026 a resident 18-hole round is $77 against $165 for guests, with punch cards and season passes on top. Proof of a Routt County address or ownership of improved property is required; fractional ownership doesn't qualify. Steamboat Golf Club offers memberships and punch cards to anyone.
What are course conditions like?
Haymaker, Rollingstone and Catamount are kept to championship standard through the season and all three hold Audubon environmental certifications. Steamboat Golf Club is a well-kept walking course. Spring rounds anywhere in the valley can be soft after snowmelt; by mid-June conditions are usually at their best.
What happens in the off-season?
The fairways become Nordic ski and snowshoe terrain, and Haymaker runs an indoor golf simulator through the winter. Most golfers here treat November to April as ski season and pick their neighborhood accordingly.
