One of Steamboat Springs' most appealing advantages is often overlooked until it's time to travel: our commercial airport is only about a 30 minute drive from town. And with a major terminal expansion underway at Yampa Valley Regional Airport in Hayden, getting to and from the Yampa Valley is positioned to become more comfortable for visitors, residents and second homeowners alike.
For the 2026 to 2027 winter season, Steamboat is scheduled to have nonstop service from 18 airports across the United States on six airlines. That is a significant level of access for a mountain community, and it makes spontaneous ski weekends, family visits and longer stays much easier to plan.

A major investment in Steamboat's gateway
In June 2026, Routt County celebrated the groundbreaking of the West Terminal Expansion at Yampa Valley Regional Airport, commonly known by its airport code, HDN. The project is the first phase of a three phase terminal improvement plan and is designed to address strong growth in passenger demand, particularly during peak winter travel periods.
According to Routt County, the approximately $82 million expansion will add 57,082 square feet of terminal space across two levels, nearly doubling the existing terminal's size. Among the improvements planned are:
- Four additional gates with passenger holding areas and four boarding bridges
- A new restaurant and bar, along with more concessions
- Additional restrooms, family facilities, a mother's room and a pet relief area
- Improved outbound baggage handling space, with room for future screening upgrades
- Architectural details inspired by the landscape and character of the Yampa Valley
Large windows, natural materials and geothermal integration are part of the plan. For travelers accustomed to the airport's busy winter arrival and departure periods, the most meaningful changes may simply be more room, better boarding facilities and a smoother experience from check in to takeoff.
The project is funded through a combination of airport revenue bonds, airport reserves and federal and state grants, rather than local tax dollars, according to the county. Read Routt County's official expansion announcement, and see the airport expansion renderings from Gensler.
When will the new terminal be ready?
Construction is underway, with the expanded terminal and new gates currently anticipated to open in June 2028. That means travelers during the 2026 to 2027 winter season will still use the existing terminal while work continues nearby. Airport officials have described temporary baggage facilities, adjusted pedestrian routes and changes to the construction footprint intended to preserve winter airport operations.
As with any major construction project, milestones can move. The airport's Fly Steamboat website offers current project and passenger information.
Just 30 minutes from Steamboat Springs
Yampa Valley Regional Airport is in Hayden, roughly 23 miles from downtown Steamboat Springs and about 27 miles from the ski resort. In normal conditions, the drive to town takes approximately 30 minutes. Weather, traffic, your lodging location and road conditions can affect that estimate.
For ski travelers, that short transfer is a major convenience. Instead of landing in Denver and making an approximately four hour drive across the mountains, you can arrive at HDN, collect your bags and be on your way to Steamboat. Rental cars and prearranged shared or private shuttles are available. Because app based rides can be limited locally, the airport recommends arranging transportation in advance.
For homeowners who split their time between Steamboat and another city, direct access to HDN can make a weekend or short visit more realistic. It is one of the less obvious lifestyle advantages of owning here, particularly for families and people who value their time in the mountains.

What the airport investment means for the Yampa Valley
The expansion is about more than gates and baggage belts. Reliable access helps make Steamboat a viable destination for travelers coming from a wide range of markets. It also serves residents who need to travel for work, family and everyday life. And as the airport grows, the design aims to maintain a sense of place instead of creating another interchangeable terminal.
For prospective buyers considering a mountain property, travel logistics deserve a place alongside questions about skiing, neighborhoods, maintenance and rental rules. A home that feels a world away from everyday life can still be surprisingly convenient to reach.
