John Madron with his golden retriever Molly in Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Steamboat Springs is the kind of place where dogs tend to become part of the lifestyle. They are on the trails, hanging out on patios, riding shotgun around town, and often waiting just as impatiently as the rest of us for the first snow.

As someone whose own Steamboat life frequently includes my golden retriever, Molly, I may be a little biased. But if you are looking for ways to explore Steamboat with your dog, there are plenty of places to get outside, stretch your legs, and enjoy the Yampa Valley together.

Hit the Trail

The Yampa River Core Trail is one of the easiest ways to get outside with your dog without ever really leaving town. The paved trail follows the Yampa River through Steamboat and connects parks, neighborhoods, downtown, and other parts of the community.

For something a little more wooded, Spring Creek Trail is another local favorite. The trail climbs gradually through aspens and evergreens and is especially beautiful in the fall when the leaves begin to change.

As always, check current leash requirements and trail conditions before heading out.

Give Them Some Room to Run

Steamboat has several places where dogs can burn off a little extra energy.

Rita Valentine Park offers wide-open space and trails with great views of the surrounding valley.

One of Molly's and my regular stops is Whistler Park. Between the open fields, trails, river access, and plenty of room to explore, it has become one of our favorite parts of the routine.

In the warmer months, dogs can cool off near the river. Once the snow arrives, those same open spaces become a completely different playground.

Après Isn't Just for Skiers

The adventure does not necessarily have to end when the hike does.

Around Steamboat, a number of patios and gathering spots welcome well-behaved dogs, making it easy to grab a drink or bite while your hiking partner relaxes nearby.

Policies can change seasonally, so it is always worth checking with the restaurant or business before bringing your dog along.

Take a Walk Through Downtown

Downtown Steamboat is also easy to explore on foot with a dog.

A walk along Lincoln Avenue can be combined with the Core Trail and the Yampa River, giving you an easy way to experience both downtown and the river corridor in the same outing.

You will also find plenty of local businesses throughout Steamboat that understand just how much dogs are part of life here.

A Few Local Rules Worth Knowing

Steamboat may be dog-friendly, but that does not mean dogs can be off leash everywhere.

Leash requirements vary depending on the park, trail, season, and location. Wildlife, trail conditions, and other users are also worth keeping in mind, particularly on busier trails.

Checking current signs and regulations before heading out helps keep Steamboat's trails and parks enjoyable for everyone.

Enjoy Steamboat With Your Best Friend

One of the things I love about living in Steamboat is how easy it is to make the outdoors part of everyday life, and dogs seem to fit naturally into that.

Whether you are walking along the Yampa, exploring a trail, spending an afternoon at Whistler Park, or relaxing on a patio after an adventure, there are plenty of ways to experience Steamboat with four-legged company.

Molly and I certainly do.

And if you are exploring more than just the trails and wondering what it might be like to call Steamboat home, I am always happy to be a resource.
