October in Steamboat Springs has a way of keeping us guessing. One day we're watching fresh snow settle on the mountain and along the Yampa River. A few days later, the snow is gone, the fall weather is back, and I'm heading out for a hike with Molly and her friend.

A little preview of winter
We got our first real taste of winter this past week, and I have to admit, seeing the mountain dusted in white gets me excited for ski season. The snow didn't stick around long, but that first glimpse of winter is always something special.
From snow to a hike and a swim

By Sunday, it was time to get outside with the dogs. We went for a hike, and naturally Molly and her friend were more interested in going for a swim than thinking about the approaching winter. Apparently they didn't get the memo that ski season is coming.
We may be past the peak of the fall colors in some places, but there's still plenty to love about this time of year: crisp air, quieter trails, and those unexpected days that feel like an extra gift before winter arrives.
One of the things I love about Steamboat
It's these little moments that make life in the Yampa Valley so enjoyable. You can get excited about skiing one morning and still spend the weekend hiking or enjoying the river. There isn't much of a pause between seasons here, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
